The Night of the Party
by Christy Murphy
Maureen can see he's in pain, and even under the circumstances, she still loves him. "And when you love someone," she thinks to herself, "and you can relieve his suffering, you do it."
She motions to Henry to stop talking. He stops and looks up at her. She can almost see a physical lump in his throat, and his chest moving anxiously beneath his tuxedo. She knew he had not intended to talk about this tonight, but she had guessed it.
"You don't love me anymore. That's what you're trying to say in the kindest way possible," she says to him her voice steady and certain. She knows she needs to be strong.
"I do love you. I'll always love you," he protests and goes to put his lean, strong arms around her. She waves him off.
"Yes, I love you, too. But I love you in the way, where I want us to be a couple, and you love me in a way that means I have a permanent place in your heart, but not a romantic place in you life. Am I right?"
He nods. She can see he's about to cry.
"I'm sad, but it's okay," she reassures him.
"I was going to tell you at a better time," he says meekly as he brushes his dark hair out of his eyes and then looks down at the tile floor of the foyer.
"There is no good time for a breakup, but I appreciate you trying to find one." Maureen can feel her strength weakening. She wishes she could jump into his arms and cry. She knows she could probably guilt him into staying with her, but pray she has the strength to do the right thing--to do what is best for them both.
"Let's still go to the party and forget all about this," he says. It's almost as if he's picking up on her thoughts.
"No, Henry. It's over," Maureen says to him, and she walks closer to him her teal blue dress shuffling in the light breeze of the ceiling fan. She kisses him on the cheek, takes him by the arm, and leads him the few feet to the door.
A moment ago she was half of a fantastic couple on her way to a swanky party, and now she's heartbroken. She had sensed something had changed in the few weeks they were away from each other. When she opened the door, she could tell it was over. He never even got to come in as far as the living room.
