The Little Miss Boca Gate Pageant

by Christy Murphy

"Let's start with you," the lady says to my friend, Jenny, as she leads her to the folding table and chairs.

I am having doubts about entering the Little Miss Boca Gate Pageant. Jenny told me I should come down to register, too, because even though she'll win the beauty contest, there are also prizes for personality.

"What are your hobbies?" the lady asks me when it's my turn. She smells like my mom's makeup bag. I tell her I don't know what a hobby is. She explains that it's something you do when you're alone for fun.

I think hard. I want to give her a great answer, because I suddenly want win the pageant. I can't help it. I love winning things. Then, it hits me.

"Thinking," I answer. "I like to think for fun."

The lady looks at me with a puzzled expression. I decide to explain.

"I'll climb to the top of the monkey bars at school during recess, and I'll sit up there and think, 'Why is the sky blue?' 'Why do only plants use photosynthesis?' 'Is God watching you when you pee?' Stuff like that."

I'm sure she'll be impressed. Photosynthesis. God. Top of the monkey bars. These are impressive things. But I look at her face, and see that I have gotten the answer wrong. I quickly try to change it.

"I also like to roller skate," I say, but her expression does not change. "And play with dolls?" I add.

The lady leans over the table and asks, "Does your Mommy know your here?"
